Why should you use a reusable straw?
“It is just a straw,” how can a simple plastic straw have such a significant impact on the environment? Every year over 8 million tons of waste enter our oceans, and plastic straws are among the top 10 wasteful items found in the oceans and on beach cleanups worldwide. Plastic straws are lightweight so that the wind can blow them easily into the ocean. When plastic enters the sea, it takes hundreds of years to break down, and even then, the material will never biodegrade. This means the plastic will stay in the ocean forever in the form of microplastics, polluting the environment, harming marine life, and contaminating the food chain.
Plastic is a material that never degrades.
This is one of the most important reasons single-use plastic straws need to be replaced by reusable alternatives, such as metal, silicone, or glass straws. These straws can be cleaned and used repeatedly, without the need to dispose of them and get a new single-use plastic straw. So use a reusable straw or go strawless. Reusable straws are commonly found in Zero Waste starter kits too.
By 2050 oceans are expected to contain more plastics than fish (by weight).
Refuse single-use plastics and start reusing
Most people use disposable straws on the go when ordering a coffee, juice, or smoothie on their commute to work or school. The next time, say ‘no’ when someone offers a straw and grab your reusable one. Reusable straws are available as a collapsible, foldable, or telescopic variant. These reusable straws are pocket-friendly and compact, so you can take them with you wherever you go. These straws get stored in a case, and most cases contain a key chain so you can attach it to your pants, bag, or purse.

Did you know that Starbucks and McDonald’s are starting to phase out plastic straws.
Reusable straws look stylish and fashionable
Besides the fact you help reduce plastic waste by using a reusable straw, it is also true that most of these straws look very stylish. Below you can see some beautiful images of reusable straws. Also, check out our zero-waste store for more inspiration about waste free, plastic-free, and eco-friendly products.
Fun fact: In Italy some bars serve their customers drinks with pasta as straws to reduce plastic waste.

What is the best material?
So you want to buy a reusable straw? What type of material is best for a straw? Most common are stainless steel, silicone, and glass straws. But there are also straws made of bamboo, but these straws tend to be more challenging to clean. Here are a few pros and cons of each material.
Katheryn from GoingZeroWaste.com uses glass reusable straws from Gaia Guy.
Stainless steel straws
- Feels very smooth in your mouth.
- Fairly easy to clean.
- Some metal straws might taste a bit metallic. You can avoid this by washing them a few times before using them. Or use a silicon tip.
- Stainless steel is very durable and safe to use.
Silicone straws
- Soft and squishy feel in your mouth.
- Easy to bend and very flexible.
- Do you like to chew on your straws, then get a silicone straw.
- Fairly easy to clean.
- You won’t experience any taste of the material.
- You can use these for both hot or cold drinks.
- Check if these straws are BPA-free.
Glass straws
- Feel very smooth and the better quality once also have smooth edges for your mouth to sip on.
- Because they are transparent you can see if the straw is clean or not.
- There is no after taste.
- Safe to use, most of the glass straws are made of borosilicate glass. This type of glass is more resistant to thermal shock and breaking.
Bamboo straws
- Less smooth and you feel the texture of the wood in your mouth.
- Difficult to clean, because it is wood.
- Might taste a little bit like wood or bamboo.
- Because it is a natural product, not every straw has the same shape and width.
- The best eco-friendly option because the straws are biodegradable.
The best material for drinking hot drinks?
Do you like to drink hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate with a straw? Then be careful with stainless steel or glass straws since these materials are good conductors of either hot or cold liquids. We recommend using straws with a silicone tip. These are safer for you to use.
How to clean a reusable straw?
With most reusable straws you buy, you receive one or multiple cleaning brushes. This brush can be used to clean the straw from the inside after you finished your drink. Straws can be a source of germs when not cleaned regularly and adequately. How do you clean your straws properly, so they stay in good condition and are hygienic to reuse? Here are some tips we gathered researching how to clean straws.

- The first tip is to find out what the cleaning instructions are from the manufacturer of the straw. Also, check if the straws are safe to put in your dishwasher.
- Rinse out the straw with warm water.
- Buy a decent cleaning brush to clean the straw from the inside. This is especially important when you drink smoothies and remove small pieces of fruit, vegetables, or other food particles inside the straw. You can also use a long q-tip when you can’t find or don’t have a cleaning brush.
- Use dish soap or baking soda on your straw brush and scrub the straw thoroughly.

Plastic straws and the environment
Can single-use plastic straws be recycled? You might think that this is possible since these straws get made of polypropylene, a highly recyclable plastic resin. But most recycling facilities do not accept plastic straws because the straws are too small and flexible and therefore cause all kinds of problems with the recycling machinery.
Plastic straws are used for just a few minutes, but their negative impact lasts for lifetimes.
